Your Body, Your Choice?

Three students in an Interactive Cartography & Geovisualization course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison set out to show the status of abortion rights and map the evolution of abortion restrictions in the states since the passage of Roe v Wade in 1973.  Using data from various sources (including advocacy groups such as NARAL and non-profit, non-partisan organizations such as the Guttmacher Institute), Katie Kowalsky, Dylan Moriarty, and Robin Tolochko created a series of interactive maps showing which states have laws restricting access to abortion, as well as how state policies have changed since 1973 on issues like waiting periods, parental consent and mandated counseling.

The maps demonstrate that since 1973, when the Supreme Court decided in the case of Roe v. Wade that abortion fell within the right to privacy protected by the Fourteenth Amendment, the states have passed legislation designed to restrict women's access to abortion, with a sharp increase in such laws since 2011.

Kowalsky, Moriarty, and Tolochko were inspired by another mapping project, Fifty Years of Change, which documents the laws the United States has passed in the half-century that both restrict and extend LGBT rights.
