FiveThirtyEight commissioned a poll answering the following question: How do you deal with splitting the check? The survey also asked how to deal with a flakey friend - someone who doesn't want to pay at all.
With the advent of Venmo and PayPal, the milennial generation has become accustomed to being able to consume without a wallet. Say you're out to lunch with a friend and you forgot to bring cash. With the technology to virtually transfer funds directly from your bank account to their's via one of these apps, it becomes a non-issue! However, with this newfound freedom does come some sticky situations. What do you do with free-riders? How do you determine who takes care of the check - pays now or later?
The data collected gave the following results. Approximately 12% of people demand to split the check evenly between parties every time while about 9% agree to cover the check with the promise of receiving a Venmo payment later.
As it turns out, opinions did not differ between genders. Men and women seem to be similar-minded when it comes to who foots the bill. Yet, men seem more eager to burn bridges with pals who aren't into an equal split.
