Using 2009 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Economic Policy Institute, the New York Times looked for a correlation between the unemployment rate and the average duration of unemployment in the fifty states. As might be expected, the two were indeed correlated, with an equation of y=1.1355x+3.3548 and an R2 value of 0.6396.
